Iowa Supreme Court Declares Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

BIG NEWS today in America's heartland. Rather than recap this whole story let me direct you to one of my favorite gay news blogs: click here

This marks the 4th state in the US where gay marriage is now legal. According to reports I've read, gay couples will be able to legally MARRY in Iowa within 21 days. Out of state couples will be allowed to marry in Iowa, though most states will not recognize it, some do and others will certainly follow. Its also significant that Iowa is not seen as a "liberal" state, or a state on one of the coasts. This is America's heartland were talking about. Apparently the first time this could be challenged is in 2012, and at this moment it seems legislators are opposed to raising a challenge to this ruling. The ruling overturns a 1998 ruling in Iowa which defined marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Iowa gays, GET IT!!

4th state? I thought Vermont hasn't gone through yet.

It's the 4th state to legalize same-sex marriage, but of course it got yanked away in CA, so there are currently only three states in which it's legal.

You're correct, Evan, that VT's legislation hasn't gone through yet. As I understand it, the Senate has to approve some minor revisions made in the House, then it goes to the Governor (who has stated that he will veto it), and then it goes back to both the House and the Senate for another vote on whether to override the Governor's veto. (It's assumed that the Senate will almost certainly vote to override, while the House isn't quite so certain).

Sarah-- you know me -- always thinking from the woman's perspective, at least as often as I can! And PROUD OF IT!

Evan-- lets hope its the 4th (or 3rd) of many many many states to come.

Wow, you should read the ruling. Fantastic that it was unanimous, though.
